Internet Archive Circa June 1998: Panumbra Demo Features

From:  http://web.archive.org/web/19980630164815/http://www.shareplay.com/thedemo.htm :

                                                                             Demo

We are releasing the demo version to give you an idea what the game will be like.   It is fully playable, but it does not have nearly as many features as the full version will.

The demo release is unsupported - we have finite resources, which we want to devote to the development of the full version.  However, we will take all the feedback we get from you and incorporate it into the first full release.  And of course, we will support it enough so that it doesn’t crash...

So, what’s in the demo for you?

Create your personalized character(s)

Create the hero you would like to be!

Choose the race you want to be.  Races have different abilities, body structures, can learn different skills at different rates, and get new skill points at different rates.  [Click here for Race descriptions] The demo gives you 6 races; in the first full release and later versions, you will have a lot more.
Set your own statistics within the racial limits.  Your statistics describe your most basic abilities, and they affect how various skills are performed.  If you’re used to other role-playing games, the statistics and what they do will probably be quite sensible and logical to you.  If you are new to this type of game, however, it is probably best to go with the default statistics.  Modifying them to get the character you want requires knowing how they affect the game play, and you don’t know that yet!
You can use predefined templates to govern what skills you learn, or allocate your skillpoints manually for results you like better.  Again, if you are a beginner, you want to use a predefined template.  Allocating skill points is fairly complicated, requiring knowledge of the game and attention to details.
And, create more heroes!  Try all races!  You can have as many characters on your Game Account as you wish, even though you can’t PLAY all of them at the same time (until the full release).

Explore the world

Enter the dark dungeons.  In the demo, you will explore the dark underground mines where many of the inhabitants of Taera are forced to live and work.  Their lives, and yours, are always endangered by twisted monsters and Corrupted people not affected by the Forbidding. Walk around in many different areas, and see them in a first person view.   Find paths obvious and secret.  Explore!  It’s a big world, and getting bigger.

Join parties

See who else is in the world with you.  Track them to venture together in a party.   Follow the party leader wherever he or she goes, or untrack the party and choose your own path.

Fight monsters

You will encounter many monsters and enemies on your way. They will be hostile, and will attack you.  You don’t have to attack them, but they don’t talk (yet) - so if you don’t fight, you’d better run!  Killing them will make the Mines safer for others to follow, so that is normally the best option.

Use your skills

You will have a wide array of skills to choose from.  Assign them to your skill bar, or use them from your list of skills.  Your skills will differ in what they do, their power and accuracy, and how easily you can learn and use them.  Find out what the best skill is to defeat that beast - or what is the best combination.  Parties with many different skills will do better than parties where everybody has the same ones. See what others are doing

You can watch what you and the others are doing in the event window.  You will get updates about everything happening in your immediate proximity area.  For instance, you can tell that your buddy Zorg just hit the Evil Elf Wizard for 10 hit points, and that subsequently Zorg was killed by the Elf Wizard’s fireball spell.

Make levels

As you go and fight monsters, or just do things, you will collect experience.   When you get enough experience, you can gain a level and be rewarded with skill points.  You can then learn more about how to use your skills, by allocating your skill points to different skills.

Learn skills

Advance in your existing skills and learn new ones.  Learning lesser skills will lead you to learn the expert skills eventually.  Govern your learning scheme by a template, or distribute your skill points manually every time you make a level - it is your choice!  If your use a template, you can just play and not worry about it, but templates are specialized, and there are often many skills they never learn.  If you spend your points manually, you can learn anything, but if you don’t specialize like the templates, it will take you a very long time to learn any of the expert skills.

Die and regenerate

In all those fights, you will lose hit points, mana and stamina, or even statistics, and eventually your character may die.  In the demo version, you can find relief at the Fountain of Youth, and when you die, you simply return to life near the place where you died.  It’s not very realistic, but a lot more fun than losing the character you worked so hard on forever!

Socialize with other players

Send and receive text messages in a dedicated text messaging area on the screen.   You can send a message to one character, to your party, everyone in your proximity, or everyone in the game.
