Panumbra Tutorial

From:  http://web.archive.org/web/19980204020809/http://www.shareplay.com/Tutorial.htm

Are you new?  You just want enough information so that you can get started and figure out the rest?  Than this page is for you!  Just follow the steps below to learn all the basics.  The links take you to the appropriate section of the user manual, if you need more detail.
Login. If this is your first time, click the "New User" button, and enter your login name and password.  This will be your account. Do not forget your password!
When you get to Tome of Souls, you need to create a character.  Select a race, and select a template.  Do not choose custom template, or change any of the default statistics for now.  If you cannot decide, select "Human Fighter". Click Done on each screen.
You must be back to Tome of Souls now.  Select your new character, and press Play.
You will see the game screen.  Take a look at the buttons under your graphics screen.  You will have a bunch of skills to use; to use them just press the buttons.  Take a look at your skill tab on the right side: you will see that all of your skills are currently level 1.   You may have more than 8 skills, in that case the program will ask you to  assign skills to your skill buttons.
Now, lets take a look at your character.  Click the Char tab. You will see your statistics and vitals: current comes first, maximum second.  Also take a look at the red, blue and yellow bars on the bottom left of the graphics.  Red for hitpoints, blue for mana, yellow for stamina: they all show  your current stats compared to the maximum.  You will see those bars going down in combat...
Now lets check who is in the game.  Click the "Info" menu on the menu bar, and select "Current Users".  A list will pop up showing who is playing currently.   You can leave that window up, but remember to refresh it once in a while- it is not updated automatically!
Now lets see who is in the same area.  Look at the red number on the right bottom side of the graphics.   That tells how many characters are in the same area.  If it is 1, you are alone.  Click the Chars tab.  You will see a list of characters.  You will see separating lines between them - they divide parties.   Party leaders are always displayed as the first person in a party.
If you see someone in your area (your Chars tab shows other people besides you); you may try to track them, so that you venture together.  It is advisable that you exchange messages before you form a party. Also remember: if you are a member of a party, not the leader, you automatically untrack any time you press any of the movement keys! That can be bad if your leader has lead you in an area you do not know.
To send messages, locate the text messaging field - should be at the bottom right, above the gray unused area.  If you have characters in your area, select "Proximity" from the radio button group below the entry field, type a message and press enter.  Your message will be sent to every person in your proximity.
Now try a message to one character only.  Refresh the Current Users window.  Select a character, for example Lukrecia.  Type "to Lukrecia: Hi!" and press enter.  The message will be sent to Lukrecia - of course you should use a name which is on the Current Users list. Do not forget the colon after the character name!
If you are alone, you can start moving around and find monsters to kill. The right bottom corner of the graphics has a compass, which tells you the direction you are facing.
If you get stuck, send messages to the newbie channel. Select "Newbie" from the address type group, type your message and press Enter. Hopefully someone will be there to help you!
If you encounter monsters, they will be displayed in the graphics. You will see their name under the graphics.  The number in parenthesis tells how many of that kind of monster there are. You will also see the blue number change - that displays the number of monsters in the area. Click on the Monsters tab (Mon). You will see all monsters listed, and their experience levels.
Now you can hit, or run!  A new character should run from any place with more than one monster.  The monsters do not notice you immediately, so you have some time to run away.  Once they start attacking you, you will have a lot harder time to run away.  The best way to run is simply backing off...
If you want to attack them, press any of your skill buttons to use the skill on the monster.  You will see the results of each skill usage in the event window - the middle panel on the right side.   You will also see your vital bars (left bottom corner of graphics) going down when the monster hits you or you use up your mana or stamina.
Once you killed the monster, check your Char tab.  You will see that you acquired some experience - and most probably that you need to recharge your hitpoints, mana or stamina urgently... so go ahead and find a fountain.
The only way to get relief in the demo is at a fountain.  There are various kinds of fountains, most of them restore one or all of your vitals, other ones just give you water... there are ones which give you protection to poison. You simply have to run over a fountain to use it. You will see your vital bars recharged.
In a middle of a fight, you may see that suddenly you are somewhere else... and your party is not there... you get a message that the monster killed you... well, you are dead. You simply re-spawn close to where you died.  Check your Char tab - you will see that you have lost some permanent vitals when you died... Oops...
Well, now you know all the basics - go ahead and fight! Explore! And read the user manual for more advanced features such as making levels, raising skill points, customizing training plans etc.  Have fun!
